Cleveland Cavaliers fans have to be thrilled with the progress that big man Evan Mobley has shown in his ability to score the ball from 3-point range this season. Mobley is shooting a career-high 42.9 percent from deep so far in his fourth NBA season, and his improved 3-point shot was on full display in Cleveland’s win over the Indiana Pacers on Jan. 14.
Mobley found nylon on all but one of his four 3s against Pascal Siakam and company. He ended up in a tie with Donovan Mitchell for the second-most 3s made of any Cavalier against Indiana, as Max Strus hit a team-high four of them.
Earlier in the week, Mobley said that for as much as he’s evolved as a 3-point shooter this season, he still thinks there’s “more to come” from him in that area of his game.
“I know I’ve been working on it. … I feel like there is still more to come,” Mobley told reporters Tuesday. “Every time one goes in, my confidence keeps going up and up.”
For further perspective on just how far he’s come as a 3-point shooter, he attempted 1.2 3s per game last season, yet he’s averaging 1.2 makes from deep so far in the 2024-25 campaign.
The numbers seem to fortify Mobley’s claim that he’s getting more confident shooting 3s with every one he makes, as the frequency with which he’s shot the ball from deep has risen every month since the start of the campaign.
In October, he took just 1.6 triples per contest. Fast forward to January, and he’s hoisting 4.3 3s per game at around the halfway point of the month.
Furthermore, Mobley has converted at least one triple in five of the six games he’s played in the first month of 2025. The only time he’s laid an egg in that regard in January came when he went 0-of-3 from 3-point range against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Cavaliers fans are hoping that Mobley will fare better shooting the ball from deep when Cleveland takes on the Thunder for the second time this month on Thursday. He might have to if the Cavaliers want to pick up a win, as the Thunder have lost just two home games since the start of the campaign.
