According to a recent report, the Atlanta Hawks are likely going to sign big man John Collins to a massive contract this offseason.
“The [Dallas] Mavericks, along with the San Antonio Spurs, are known to have registered interest in John Collins, but it appears the Atlanta forward will likely re-sign with the Hawks following their sprint to the Eastern Conference Finals on a deal that could surpass $120 million in total value, sources said,” wrote Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
It sounds like the Hawks want to keep as much of their core intact as possible from the 2020-21 season. The team made a surprise run to the Eastern Conference Finals, and it seems like Atlanta could be just one key piece away from becoming a legitimate title contender.
Collins has been a huge part of the Hawks’ identity in recent years. In the 2020-21 season, he averaged 17.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. He made 55.6 percent of his shots from the field and 39.9 percent of his shots from deep.
The 6-foot-9 power forward is a great representation of the modern big man, as his ability to shoot the ball is one of the best elements of his game.
Collins was originally drafted in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft, and he has met expectations every step of the way throughout his career. The next step for the 23-year-old would be to make an All-Star team. He likely isn’t very far from that goal.
The future looks very bright for the Hawks. They could be one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference for years to come.
