Atlanta Hawks star guard Trae Young shared a lofty goal that he has under Hawks head coach Quin Snyder.
Young spoke about confrontations with coaches and how to work through that as a star player with Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green. There’s no doubt that Green knows a thing or two about confrontations with his coach, but he and Steve Kerr have been together for four titles in Golden State.
“Hopefully Quin, for me, is my Steve Kerr,” Young said. “I hope Quin is the guy that we win 3, 4 championships with. That’s my plan.”
Snyder took over as the Hawks’ head coach in the middle of the 2022-23 season. He ended up coaching the team for 21 regular season games, leading the Hawks to a 10-11 record.
The team did win its play-in tournament game against the Miami Heat, allowing it to capture the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics in six games.
The Hawks have struggled to get back to the level that they were at in the 2020-21 season when they made the Eastern Conference Finals. That season, the team beat the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers to play the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals.
The Bucks went on to win that series and the NBA title over the Phoenix Suns.
Young, a two-time All-Star, had a bit of a down season in the 2022-23 campaign from an efficiency standpoint. He shot just 42.9 percent from the field (his lowest since his rookie season) and 33.5 percent from 3 (also the lowest since his rookie season).
Still, he finished the season averaging 26.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and a career-high 10.2 assists per game.
With Snyder now at the helm in Atlanta, Young seems hopeful that the Hawks can take things to the next level in future seasons.
Snyder led the Utah Jazz to the NBA Playoffs in six straight seasons before leaving his post as the team’s head coach. While he didn’t take Utah to a Western Conference Finals appearance, the team did finish with the No. 1 seed in the West in the 2020-21 season.
Atlanta is certainly hoping the pairing of Young and Snyder can lead the team back to being amongst the top squads in the Eastern Conference in the 2023-24 season.
