There reportedly is optimism that Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons will return to action later this month.

Simmons, who won’t play in Brooklyn’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday, will make the trip to Philadelphia and join his team at Wells Fargo Center, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.

“Ben Simmons will not play in Thursday’s Nets-Sixers game, but sources tell me the three-time All-Star is expected to make the return trip to Philadelphia and be on the bench with his team inside Wells Fargo Center,” Charania said. “Simmons is working toward making his debut for the Nets, as he ramps up after dealing with back soreness, and I’m told there is optimism about a return to action later this month.”

Simmons has yet to play in a game this season. He was dealt to the Brooklyn Nets at the trade deadline in the James Harden deal.

When healthy, Simmons is one of the best defensive players in the NBA, and he’s been an elite playmaker throughout his career as well.

For his career, Simmons averages 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game while shooting 56.0 percent from the field.

The Nets are hoping that Simmons will improve their defense and play well alongside Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

Durant, Simmons and Irving could be a lethal trio in the playoffs, but the Nets certainly would prefer for the three players to get some time together during the regular season before dropping them in together in the playoffs.

There will surely be more updates on Simmons throughout the month. Time will tell when the former No. 1 overall pick makes his season debut.
