In recent years, the discussion around marijuana use in professional sports in the United States has changed a lot.
For years, marijuana was frowned upon by a majority of people, and star athletes even risked serious repercussions if they were caught using marijuana.
However, the narrative around the plant-based psychoactive drug has changed immensely in the last decade or so. In fact, a lot of states have begun to decriminalize marijuana altogether.
One person who is all for killing the stigma around marijuana is Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant.
In an interview with legendary comedian and television host David Letterman, Durant spoke candidly about how he sees and uses marijuana.
“To me, it clears the distractions out of your brain a little bit,” Durant said in an advance of the interview. “Settles you down. It’s like having a glass of wine.”
When asked about his own use, Durant smiled and responded honestly.
“I’m actually high right now,” he said.
More importantly, Durant did raise the topic that even to this day, there are people serving serious time in prison for selling marijuana. That fact has become even more absurd as businesses all over the country make immense revenue from selling the product.
Durant’s message and candid admission about being high during the interview itself are just two more signs of how much things have changed in recent years. It will be interesting to see how much more he discusses his involvement in the blossoming marijuana industry going forward.
Durant is coming off a season in which he averaged 29.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game on 51.8 percent shooting from the field and 38.3 percent shooting from deep.
