Report: Spencer Dinwiddie plans to decline player option and become free agent

Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie will reportedly decline his player option and become a free agent this offseason.

The report comes the morning after Dinwiddie’s Nets were eliminated in an epic Game 7 against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Dinwiddie missed almost the entire 2020-21 campaign with an ACL tear that he suffered three games into the regular season. His presence was certainly missed, and there is no telling how the season would have unfolded for Brooklyn if the 28-year-old hadn’t been lost for the year.

Dinwiddie spent the first two seasons of his career with the Detroit Pistons before joining the Nets. The 2020-21 season was his fifth with the team.

His production reached an all-time high in the 2019-20 season, when he averaged 20.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game. Dinwiddie has seemingly gotten better every year of his career.

Efficiency has sometimes been an issue for him, but his career shooting percentage of 41.o percent is a respectable mark.

The ACL injury could impact the market for Dinwiddie, but it’s a safe bet that a handful of teams will be interested regardless.
