With his NBA playing days behind him, 10-time All-Star Carmelo Anthony is ready to get involved in a new venture.
Anthony is now in line to become an owner of an expansion team in the National Basketball League, the top men’s pro league in Australia and New Zealand, and he’s also got his eye on something bigger: NBA ownership.
“Now,” Anthony told Andscape of getting involved in NBA ownership. “I want it now. And that’s something that I’m working towards as we speak. So, I’m actually excited about those opportunities.”
Anthony is already a legend in NBA circles, and if he gets involved in the ownership world, he’ll have a chance to add to his resume even more.
He retired after a playing career that spanned 19 seasons. In addition to his 10 All-Star nods, he earned six All-NBA selections, won a scoring title and was named to the 75th Anniversary Team.
Anthony averaged 22.5 points per game during his career on 44.7 percent shooting from the field and 35.5 percent shooting from deep. During his prime years, he was a truly special scorer, averaging at least 25 points per game in seven different seasons.
The now 40-year-old never won an NBA title during his playing career, but he did win numerous Olympic gold medals. He also became a national champion in college. If he becomes an NBA owner in the future, he’ll have a chance to capture that elusive NBA Finals ring in a new role.
Ownership is a world that a handful of high-profile players often speak about getting into, with current Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James perhaps being the most notable example. He is expected to try to crack the ownership world once he retires from the league as a player.
Of course, fellow NBA legend Michael Jordan was also the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets for several years before giving up that title in 2023.
While Anthony debuted all the way back in 2003, he played as recently as the 2021-22 season, so he’s capable of relating to today’s NBA players. That should give him a bit of an advantage if and when he becomes an owner in the league.
Anthony will likely become a Hall of Famer once he’s eligible for the honor in 2026.
