Report: Dallas Mavericks trying to insert themselves into Kyle Lowry sweepstakes

The Dallas Mavericks are trying to insert themselves in the Kyle Lowry sweepstakes according to a source.

The Mavericks will have to beat out the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers in the race. Both of those teams are also interested in the six-time All-Star.

Another factor at play is the future of Kristaps Porzingis. The team needs to figure out whether he is a long-term fit in Dallas.

Lowry, 35, is one of the top guards available in the upcoming free agent market. He has spent each of his last nine seasons with the Toronto Raptors, where he won a title in 2019.

Lowry’s production dwindled slightly this past regular season. He averaged 17.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game while shooting 43.6 percent from the field and 39.6 percent from deep.

His best campaign came in the 2016-17 season. That year, Lowry averaged 22.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game.

The Mavericks are apparently looking to add some talent at the guard position to help out superstar Luka Doncic. Doncic has established himself as one of the best young players in the league and is coming off of a season in which he averaged 27.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 8.6 assists per game.

The Mavericks were recently eliminated in the first round of the 2021 NBA Playoffs by the Los Angeles Clippers. Bringing Lowry in would be a step in the right direction in ensuring that a similar outcome does not occur next season.
