Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma wants Fox Sports analyst Chris Broussard off of television after Broussard called Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki “overrated.”
Broussard also believes that Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic would be considered better than Nowitzki if he wins the NBA Finals this season against the Miami Heat.
“He’s better than Dirk,” Broussard said. “If he wins this championship, he’s definitely better than Dirk. I think he’s just better than Dirk period.”
After going back and forth a bit with Nick Wright, Broussard called Nowitzki “overrated.”
“I think Dirk is overrated by a lot of people,” Broussard said.
Broussard argued that with a title win, Jokic would have more MVPs (two) than Nowitzki (one) and the same number of championships.
While that’s a correct statement, he’s certainly selling the Mavericks legend a little short in his argument.
Nowitzki, a future Hall of Famer, is one of the greatest international players in NBA history, and he won an NBA title with the Mavericks in the 2010-11 season. Nowitzki’s playoff run that season was one of the greatest in recent memory.
Dallas knocked off the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round and then dominated two of the best teams in the Western Conference. Nowitzki and the Mavs swept Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round before downing the Oklahoma City Thunder and Kevin Durant in the Western Conference Finals in five games.
That set up a matchup in the NBA Finals with the Miami Heat and their Big 3 of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Despite being underdogs in the series, the Mavs and Nowitzki upset the Heat in six games.
A 14-time All-Star and 12-time All-NBA selection, Nowitzki spent 21 seasons in Dallas after being taken with the No. 9 overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft. He is considered one of the NBA’s 75 greatest players of all time.
Jokic is a great player, and he certainly could pass Nowitzki when his own career is over, but it seems like Broussard is discounting the longevity of Nowitzki’s greatness.
The Serbian big man and his Nuggets took a 1-0 series lead on the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals on Thursday night, with Game 2 set for Sunday night.
