As every NBA fan knows, one of the most influential movements in the current NBA era has been the forming of superteams across the league.
Many superteams have been formed in recent years, and while some have failed, others have won NBA titles. Generally, it seems as though most NBA fans would prefer the league did not have superteams. After all, the league is far more fun when it is competitive.
Interestingly, one person who has a fairly unique take on NBA superteams is legendary big man Dikembe Mutombo. Mutombo was recently asked by TMZ about superteams in the league, and he argued that there are no superteams currently in the NBA. In fact, it seems as though he feels that the entire concept of superteams existing in the league is false.
He made that point after being asked about the Brooklyn Nets and their failure to get out of the first round of the playoff bracket this season.
“What is a superteam?” Mutombo said. “Who told you there was a superteam? Who told you there was a superteam? Everybody play in the NBA. They play on the same team. I work for the league. There is no superteam.”
He then suggested that raw talent is not what makes a championship team in the league. Instead, he said it’s about mental fortitude.
Without a doubt, raw talent alone cannot win a title. Fans have seen that proven over and over again. However, there is no doubt that teams with superior talent on the court fare better in the playoffs than teams led by a single star.
In the playoffs right now, every team remaining boasts some talented players. However, no team remaining is a certified superteam. Perhaps that is why the entire bracket is so competitive at the moment.
