Klay Thompson’s NBA future is in flux, but the Golden State Warriors star may have sent out a clue as he reportedly has unfollowed the team and removed content related to its 2022 NBA championship from his Instagram account.
A four-time NBA champion with the Warriors, the 34-year-old may have played his last game for the franchise when the Warriors were eliminated from the play-in round with a discouraging loss to the Sacramento Kings back in April.
At the time, it was reported that there had been no substantive talks between Thompson and the team and therefore he could be headed toward free agency this offseason. During the 2023-24 NBA regular season, Thompson was linked to the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic by one NBA executive.
This regular season, the former All-Star averaged 17.9 points per game, the first time since the 2013-14 campaign that he scored at a rate of fewer than 20 points per game. He sat out all of the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons because of leg injuries.
The entire Warriors organization may be entering a period of transition that would be kicked off by a possible departure of Thompson, who has been with the team since the 2011-12 NBA season. He has teamed with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green – as well as with head coach Steve Kerr – to make Golden State one of the most successful teams of this era. Some people around the NBA reportedly believe that the Warriors will do what they can to keep that core together and take another run at adding another NBA championship to the ones they won in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022.
However, after failing to make the 2024 NBA Playoffs, it might be time for a change for the Warriors. With Curry at 36 years old and Green at 34 years old, the team may find it difficult to continue to compete in the very competitive Western Conference against teams with much younger stars, such as the Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder. It is also worth mentioning the 2023 NBA champion Denver Nuggets as well as the Dallas Mavericks, who are competing in the 2024 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics.
