NBA insider provides murky update on Steve Kerr’s future with Golden State Warriors

Steve Kerr’s future with the Golden State Warriors has received a murky update.

“I’m told the Warriors are open to making moves in the coming weeks ahead of the Feb. 8 trade deadline, though they don’t necessarily want to take back long-term, massive contracts in a deal,” NBA insider Shams Charania wrote. “The mindset in Golden State right now is that everyone aside from Stephen Curry is on the table, but realistically, given the franchise’s relationships with its longtime veterans and affinity for some of its younger players, that may not be how things develop. And looming over all of this is Steve Kerr, whose contract expires after the season, and I’m told there’s no progress toward a new deal for the four-time NBA champion coach as of right now.”

Kerr has served as the head coach of the Warriors franchise since the 2014-15 season. During his time with the team, he has coached the Warriors to four titles and six NBA Finals appearances.

The Warriors’ most recent title came when they defeated the Boston Celtics in six games in the 2022 NBA Finals.

But fast forward to the current day, and the Warriors seem far away from contending for a title. The team holds just the 12th-best record in the Western Conference at 17-20 and has lost six of its last eight games.

Golden State was embarrassed in its most recent loss against the New Orleans Pelicans on Jan. 10. The Warriors lost by 36 and allowed the Pelicans to score 141 points. Curry had one of his worst games of the season in the loss, as he scored just 15 points while shooting 4-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-8 from outside the 3-point arc.

The Warriors are still without their defensive anchor in Draymond Green, who hasn’t taken the floor for the team since a Dec. 12 matchup against the Phoenix Suns, which Golden State lost by three points.

Golden State’s next chance to snap its losing streak will come against the Chicago Bulls on Friday. The Bulls sit as the No. 9 seed in the Eastern Conference right now and are riding a three-game winning streak. Chicago hasn’t lost a game since falling to the New York Knicks on Jan. 3.

The Warriors then have a road game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday following their matchup against Chicago. The Bucks put together a dominant win over the Boston Celtics — who hold the NBA’s top record — on Thursday.
