Former NBA guard Nick Young shared an interesting take on social media where he claimed that people are “scared” to say that Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving is better than Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry.
Young compared the two star guards to Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan.
It’s certainly an interesting take by Young, who actually played with Curry during one season with the Warriors. Young has not played in the NBA since the 2018-19 season, but he did win a title alongside Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green in the 2017-18 season.
Both Irving and Curry have a ton of accolades, but Curry is widely considered to be the greatest 3-point shooter of all time. He holds the record for most made shots from beyond the arc in a single career, and he’s led the NBA in 3-pointers made in a single season eight different times.
Irving and Curry matched up in the NBA Finals a few times during Irving’s time with the Cleveland Cavaliers. While Curry and the Warriors ended up winning more titles (Irving has just one in his career), Irving did hit an insane dagger over Curry in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals.
That season, the Cavs erased a 3-1 series deficit to come back and beat the Warriors in the Finals.
When it comes to accolades, Curry has Irving beat. He has multiple league MVP awards (Irving does not have one), an NBA Finals MVP (Irving does not have one), more All-NBA selections (10 to Irving’s three) and more All-Star selections (10 to Irving’s eight).
Curry is also a four-time champion, winning a title before Durant joined the Warriors and one after, proving to be the cornerstone of the Golden State dynasty.
Any NBA fan, or former player like Young, can certainly have the opinion that Irving is better, but it would be interesting to hear what the argument is for the Dallas star.
Irving is one of the best guard scorers the league has ever seen, but Curry averages more points, rebounds and assists per game for his career. Irving is younger, so there is plenty of time for him to build his resume to compare to Curry’s when they both end up hanging it up for good.
It’ll be interesting to see if any other players weigh in on Young’s take on which guard they believe is the better player.
