Report: Coach with ‘pretty good intel’ on Bryce Young compares him to Stephen Curry

A coach with “pretty good intel” on former University of Alabama quarterback Bryce Young compared him to NBA star Stephen Curry, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

“I heard an incredibly interesting comp for Bryce Young last week, from a coach who’s got pretty good intel on the Alabama quarterback—one that’s, admittedly, unconventional,” Breer wrote.

“Steph Curry.”

Breer pointed out Young’s poise, vision and instincts for the game as a few reasons why he’s comparable to Curry, as well as the quarterback’s accuracy throwing the ball. Breer compared it to Curry’s amazing shooting ability.

“And it does make some sense, first and foremost in how calmly Young plays, and also in his vision, instincts and feel for the game,” Breer wrote. “Then, there’s Young’s ability to consistently put the ball where he wants it, which, of course, Curry is pretty adept at in his sport. All of which helps both guys overcome their relative lack of stature, and everyman sort of appearance for a pro athlete (or pro athlete-to-be).”

Young is in the conversation to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and the quarterback is coming off an impressive season at Alabama.

The Heisman Trophy winner in the 2021 season, Young put together a ridiculous career at Alabama, throwing for 80 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions in 34 career games.

That stat is even more impressive when considering that 79 of those scores came in his sophomore and junior seasons when he was the team’s starting quarterback. Young appeared in seven games as a freshman, throwing for one touchdown in 22 pass attempts.

Anytime an athlete is compared to an all-time great like Curry, it’s a major accomplishment. However, in this instance, it’s interesting to see Curry and Young compared since they play two totally different sports.

Young’s draft stock has taken a bit of a hit since he’s on the smaller side for a quarterback, but that hasn’t held him back at any level of football he’s played to this point in his career.

Curry, who was questioned for his slighter frame prior to being drafted to the NBA, has shown that he is still one of the best players in the league despite his size.

Young is looking to do the same in the NFL, and there are several teams that could consider drafting him. The Carolina Panthers need a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick, and the Houston Texans (No. 2) and Indianapolis Colts (No. 4) are also likely in the market for a new signal-caller.

No matter where he lands, Young will look to prove the doubters wrong and show that he can be the Curry of the NFL.
