Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry reportedly would like the team to keep its current core for at least one more season.
The Warriors have some decisions to make this offseason, as forward Draymond Green can opt out of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent. In addition to that, guard Klay Thompson will be in the final season of his current deal in the 2023-24 campaign.
“I think the most likely scenario is that the Warriors keep most of this together for at least one more season,” The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami wrote. “That’s what Curry wants. His opinion sort of matters.”
The Warriors did win the NBA Finals in the 2021-22 season, with Curry dominating in the playoffs on his way to winning his first NBA Finals MVP award.
This season, Golden State took a step back with Jordan Poole playing much worse in the playoffs than he did during the team’s 2022 title run and the Warriors struggling mightily all season on the road.
Golden State earned the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference, knocking out the No. 3-seeded Sacramento Kings in the first round of the playoffs in seven games.
The playoff run didn’t go on for much longer, as Golden State was knocked out of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round.
While the Warriors didn’t have the same success as they did in the 2021-22 season, Curry still seems to believe that the current core is able to win another title.
It makes sense, as the former MVP is still one of the best players in the league, but Golden State needs to find more consistent production from role players like Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody and others to be a true title contender.
Curry, Thompson and Green have been through a lot together, winning four NBA titles since the 2014-15 season.
Thompson and Curry have both dealt with major injuries in their time together, but the team made it back to the mountaintop last season, showing that the Golden State dynasty wasn’t quite done.
If Curry wants to keep this team together, it’s likely that Golden State will pursue a new deal with Green to avoid losing him to another franchise.
