In the fourth quarter of Saturday’s matchup between the Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers, Warriors star Stephen Curry had an open path to the rim on a fastbreak sequence. Curry seized on the opportunity for an easy basket by throwing down his first slam dunk of the decade and since the year 2019.
But Curry commented on his dunk after the game and hinted that fans shouldn’t expect him to throw the ball down again as an NBA player. He admitted that it was very difficult for him to get all that way off the ground.
“I’m calling it right now,” Curry said. “That was the last one you’ll see. … For sure. I will only lay the ball up. Took everything out of me to get up there.”
The guard has been dealing with knee tendinitis this season but hinted that he’s been feeling well lately.
“The maintenance still requires a lot to get ready to play,” Curry said. “You’re still mindful of the knees. It’s holding stable, which is all I want — be available and be stable out there.”
His dunk in the final frame was a solid microcosm of how well he played against the 76ers. He dominated the game as a scorer and playmaker, as he totaled 29 points while shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 5-of-12 from 3-point range to go along with a whopping 13 assists.
The 76ers had no answers for Curry but still came out on top in the game by a final score of 126-119 behind a career night from guard Quentin Grimes. Grimes went off for a game-high 44 points along with six made 3-pointers.
It seems very possible that Curry is indeed telling the truth in that he won’t log another dunk in the NBA ever again. He is getting up there in age, as he’s currently 36 years old and his 37th birthday is coming up later in the month.
Curry is hoping that he will be part of at least one more deep playoff run before his pro career comes to an end. Despite Saturday’s loss, the Warriors have been playing well overall lately with a record of 7-3 over their last 10 games.
Golden State is also well positioned to contend for a playoff spot after the team missed out on the playoffs a season ago. The Warriors sit as the No. 7 seed in the West currently and are less than one game back of the Los Angeles Clippers for the conference’s No. 6 seed.
