Stephen Curry believes he deserves this season’s MVP: ‘I gotta be’

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry clearly believes that he should win this year’s NBA Most Valuable Player award but is fully prepared to be snubbed by voters.

Curry appeared on “The Rex Chapman Show with Josh Hopkins” and was asked about his MVP chances, given his sparkling numbers on the year.

“I mean — I gotta be, I gotta be,” the three-time NBA champion said about his MVP chances. “I probably won’t get it, but whatever.

When Chapman indicated that Curry is virtually a lock to win his third MVP award, Curry acknowledged his opinion may be inaccurate.

“I like to be dramatic sometimes, so I’m just setting the table [laughter],” Curry said.

Entering the Warriors’ Wednesday night game against the Washington Wizards, Curry is averaging 31.4 points, 5.9 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game.

Those numbers are similar to what he produced during the 2015-16 season, the second of two consecutive seasons in which he was awarded the league MVP trophy.

In both of those seasons, the Warriors reached the NBA Finals, winning the 2014-15 title. That prospect likely isn’t in the cards this season, but Curry is making it hard for voters to ignore his accomplishments.
