Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry was unhappy with his team throughout Golden State’s 119-116 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. Leaked audio captured the star guard consistently expressing frustration and pleading with his teammates to step up on the defensive end.
The season has been a rough one for Golden State so far, so it’s understandable that Curry would be feeling a bit frustrated. The loss to Phoenix was the second straight loss for the Warriors, who currently sit 11th in the Western Conference playoff picture with a 10-13 record.
Despite Golden State’s struggles, Curry has been putting up some extremely solid numbers personally. In 21 appearances, Curry is averaging 29.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 33.7 minutes per performance.
The main issue for the Warriors is the lack of help that Curry has been getting. Key contributors like Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins have been struggling mightily all season, and Draymond Green keeps allowing his behavior to get the best of him.
Green was ejected for the third time this season on Tuesday night after he struck Suns center Jusuf Nurkic in the head while wilding flailing his arms around in order to try to sell a call in the third quarter of the contest. He was suspended indefinitely as a result of his actions.
The Warriors forward was already suspended for five games earlier this season for choking Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert and dragging him across the court. The hope was that suspension would help to prevent Green from acting out again, but that clearly didn’t work.
So, while Curry is still playing at an elite level, no one else around him has been, and that needs to change if the Warriors ultimately hope to qualify for postseason play. There’s still a lot of basketball left to play in the season, but in a competitive Western Conference, Golden State doesn’t have the luxury of time to figure things out.
The Warriors will be back in action in a matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night. That game will be a tough one. After a relatively slow start to the season, the Clippers have been playing much better basketball lately. They’ve won five straight games and seven out of their last 10.
