LeBron James says his postgame comments weren’t about leaving the Lakers for another team

The Los Angeles Lakers headed into the 2025 NBA Playoffs with relatively high expectations. They were on the heels of their first 50-win season in years, and they were hoping to make a run led by two of the best players in the league today in Luka Doncic and LeBron James.

It’s now safe to claim that Los Angeles fell short of those expectations, as the Lakers lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a gentleman’s sweep in the first round.

After the Lakers’ Game 5 loss on Wednesday, James was asked about how the Lakers could improve for the 2025-26 campaign and gave an answer that painted a murky picture regarding his future.

“It’s a business,” James said. “So you don’t know what the roster will look like next year besides the guys that [are] locked into contracts. S—, I got a lot to think about myself. So I don’t know what the roster will look like. I don’t know where I stand right now.”

James later clarified that he was not alluding to the possibility of suiting up for another NBA team.

“Just continuing to play, I don’t know where I’m at,” James told ESPN. “That’s what that is. Not coming back to play here. Just playing, period.”

James is the NBA’s oldest player at 40 years old, but he still produced in the Lakers’ first-round playoff series. He averaged 25.4 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.8 blocks per contest across five games played. Additionally, he shot 48.9 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from 3-point range.

Unfortunately, the Lakers and James saw their quest for the Larry O’Brien Trophy end in the opening round of the playoffs for a second consecutive year. The Denver Nuggets sent Los Angeles home in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs.

While the Lakers were a first-round exit once again this season and James’ time is limited to compete for another NBA title before he retires from the league, he should be optimistic about the team’s chances of contending next season, should the Lakers make an offseason acquisition or two.

The Lakers’ lack of depth at the big man spot was apparent in the team’s series against the Timberwolves, and maybe Los Angeles would have put up more of a fight had it not rescinded the Mark Williams trade that nearly happened around the deadline.

Hopefully, Los Angeles can add a proven and productive big who stands out as an ideal complementary player to James and Doncic in the near future.
