Star forward LeBron James’ stint with the Los Angeles Lakers might be nearing its end soon after he’s spent the last seven seasons with the storied franchise and helped the team to its 17th title in franchise history in 2020.
NBA insider John Gambadoro made a post on X on Friday indicating that the Lakers wish to move on from the 40-year-old as soon as possible.
They would like to move on from him ASAP

James is still with the Lakers after he exercised his player option for this coming season last month, but the Lakers also have yet to officially announce James’ opt-in, which led one anonymous NBA executive to claim that “something is definitely going on” between the two sides.
The executive called a trade unlikely but said that the fact that there has been no announcement from the Lakers just yet is “very strange.”
Assuming it’s true that the Lakers want to move on from James as soon as possible, it’s hard to believe that doing so this offseason would put the Lakers in a better position to win at a high level in the 2025-26 campaign.
Because of James’ age, it would be unrealistic to expect equal value back in terms of talent in a trade for a player of his caliber.
Any team looking to acquire James via trade would likely want to give up as few talented players as possible in hopes that it could contend for a title in the 2025-26 campaign.
While it’s very possible the Lakers would only get pennies on the dollar in return for James in a trade, that would still be a more beneficial option than buying him out, something that seems incredibly unlikely. If the Lakers merely waived him, that would mean losing a superstar player for nothing in return.
Only time will tell what becomes of James’ future in Los Angeles or if he will even be a member of the team by the start of the 2025-26 campaign. But for now, the easiest way forward may be for James and L.A. to make it work for another season.
Lakers fans should keep their eyes peeled for any rumors regarding the four-time NBA champion in the coming days and weeks.
