Pat Bev takes issue with Mark Williams’ reaction to Lakers’ elimination: ‘What kind of weird time is that?’

Around the time the Los Angeles Lakers lost Game 5 of their first-round playoff series to the Minnesota Timberwolves and were eliminated from the 2025 NBA Playoffs, Charlotte Hornets big man Mark Williams seemingly trolled the Lakers with an X post that contained just one emoji.

At least one former Lakers player was rubbed the wrong way by Williams’ reaction to Los Angeles getting bounced from the playoffs. Former NBA guard Patrick Beverley, who appeared in 45 games with the Lakers during the 2022-23 season, said that the post from Williams was “weird.”

“That was weird to me, especially coming from a team that is God awful,” Beverley said. “I didn’t understand that. I really didn’t understand that.”

Beverley continued.

“He was happy they lost,” he said. “What kind of weird time is that? That’s weird, bro.”

Williams’ decision to make that X post likely had something to do with the fact that he nearly joined the Lakers earlier this season. Los Angeles and Charlotte agreed to a deal that would have sent a trade package highlighted by rookie Dalton Knecht and draft capital to the Hornets and Williams to the Lakers before the trade deadline.

But the Lakers went on to rescind the trade and alleged that Williams failed his physical. Whether or not Williams should have failed is a disputed topic, as Williams’ agent Jeff Schwartz has gone on record as saying that the Lakers shouldn’t have failed his client.

Even Williams himself has said that he thinks other factors led to the Lakers nixing the trade outside of simply how he performed during his physical.

At the very least, Beverley is right in his comments about Williams playing for a lowly team in the Hornets, as Charlotte finished with one of the worst records in the NBA during the 2024-25 season. The Hornets mustered just 19 wins on the season and ended up with the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference.

Charlotte also hasn’t tasted the playoffs in almost a decade, as its last playoff appearance came in 2016.

Williams played in just over half of the Hornets’ 82 games in the regular season and averaged a double-double of 15.3 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Believe it or not, Williams’ 44 games played marked his most in a single NBA season, as he’s appeared in just 106 games across his first three seasons in the league.
