Former NBA guard Brandon Jennings wasn’t a fan of Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George saying that he realized he can’t be the best player on a championship team.
George, who is an All-Star this season, apparently views himself as a good No. 2 option on a title team.
It’s hard to disagree with Jennings’ take, as George is not only a terrific player, but it feels like the Clippers star is selling himself short. That’s what seemed to bother Jennings most about the comments.
Since leaving the Indiana Pacers, George has teamed up with stars such as Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony and Kawhi Leonard. He and Leonard are currently looking to lead the Clippers to a deep playoff run this season, and they actually added Westbrook in the buyout market.
An eight-time All-Star and six-time All-NBA selection, George is either concerned about the top-heavy teams in the NBA, or he doesn’t truly believe in his talent as a top option.
Ironically, George nearly led the Clippers to the NBA Finals in the 2020-21 season after Leonard was injured in the second round of the playoffs. George and the Clippers made the Western Conference Finals in the 2020-21 season, but they were knocked out of the playoffs by the Phoenix Suns.
This season, the Clippers may have their best chance to make the NBA Finals since George and Leonard came to Los Angeles. The team is the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference, but both stars are healthy after dealing with injuries in the past two seasons.
It seems like Jennings wants George to have more confidence in his abilities, especially with all that he has accomplished in the NBA.
This season, George is averaging 23.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game while shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 38.3 percent from beyond the arc. He is one of the game’s best two-way stars, and he’s averaged at least 21.5 points per game in eight straight seasons.
George and Leonard are one of the better duos in the NBA, and they certainly can compete for a title in a wide-open Western Conference this season. However, George’s mindset isn’t something that one would expect from such a great player.
