A shooting took place outside FedExForum as the Memphis Grizzlies hosted the Detroit Pistons on Friday night.

Three men reportedly have been taken into custody in relation to the incident that occurred near the start of the game at FedExForum.

The Memphis Police Department issued a statement on the matter on Saturday morning.

“The men and women of the Memphis Police Department continue to work diligently to create a safe environment downtown for our residents and visitors alike,” the statement read.

“It was with this heightened vigilance that MPD officers quickly responded to a shooting incident involving three individuals that occurred yesterday evening near Ida B. Wells Drive. All three suspects involved in the incident were quickly apprehended by MPD officers.

“The safety and well-being of our community remains our top priority. We are increasing visibility in the downtown area and will continue to employ additional security measures to provide a heightened sense of safety for everyone.”

According to court documents, multiple men approached another man and started shooting as they chased him in Downtown Memphis.

Kelvin Young was booked on several offenses, including aggravated assault, evading arrest and three counts of reckless endangerment. Miciah Warren, who reportedly was the man being chased, was also arrested Friday and charged with theft of a firearm. The third man who was taken into custody reportedly has not been identified.

Court documents show that a police officer was directing traffic near the arena when shots rang out. She reported that she witnessed a group of men shooting at each other before one of them — Warren — ran toward her and was detained.

An earlier report indicated that a Memphis police officer in the area on traffic detail fired his weapon, but it is unknown why.

Reportedly no one was hit by any gunfire, but a woman running away injured her shoulder.

Memphis is playing at home again on Saturday night, hosting the Philadelphia 76ers. The Grizzlies will play four of their five remaining games this season at home.

On Friday, the Grizzlies defeated the Pistons 108-90 in a matchup of two teams eliminated from playoff contention. Memphis is in 13th place in the Western Conference with a 27-50 record, while Detroit is in last place in the Eastern Conference with an NBA-worst 13-64 mark.

Coincidentally, Grizzlies star Ja Morant was suspended by the NBA for the first 25 games of this season because of social media activity showing him with a firearm. It was his second suspension for his involvement with firearms in two seasons. He served an eight-game ban in March 2023.

Morant made his season debut in December but wound up playing only nine games. After getting injured during a training session, he had surgery on his right shoulder in January, ending his campaign. He was able to average 25.1 points per game in those nine contests, and Memphis won six of them.
