Tyler Herro opens up about possibility of signing contract extension with Heat: ‘I would love to be here’

The play of Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro in his sixth NBA season was a bright spot in a 2024-25 campaign that saw plenty go wrong for Miami. For one, Herro earned an All-Star nod for the first time in his pro career.

Furthermore, he averaged career-highs across the board, including in points (23.9), assists (5.5), steals (0.9) and made 3s (3.3) per game.

Now that Miami’s season is over after it was swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs, Herro opened up on his future with the Heat and talked about the possibility of inking a contract extension with the team. He’s seemingly all for signing a long-term deal to stick around in Miami.

“Not the biggest deal, but I would love to be here,” Herro said. “The front office, the organization, the city, everyone knows how much I love Miami. I’ve been here since I was 18, 19. I’ve got two kids here.

“This is really home for me. I love being here. Basketball is why I’m here at the end of the day. I want to win and I know how badly this organization and city want to win. We will see what happens. If it doesn’t get done in October, then we can get it done next summer. It will just be a little bit higher of a price.”

The Heat are the only NBA team Herro has played for to this point. Miami drafted him with one of the last lottery picks in the 2019 NBA Draft after the guard was a standout collegiate player at the University of Kentucky.

He has seen his role with Miami change quite a bit over the years. He spent much of his first three seasons with the Heat coming off the pine, and he was a very productive reserve during that time. After all, he won the league’s Sixth Man of the Year award in the 2021-22 season after he averaged 20.7 points per game across 66 contests (10 starts).

This season, he started every one of the 77 games he appeared in and was the Heat’s top scoring option. He led the team in points and shot attempts per contest by sizable margins.

Herro ostensibly wants to sign an extension with the Heat, and the Heat organization should be interested in getting a deal done as well. For all the growth that Herro has shown over the years, he may still have some untapped potential. He’s just 25 years old, and his 26th birthday won’t be until January of next year.

While Herro has his flaws — he’s not exactly a disruptive defender — his relative youth and offensive skill set make him a player worth holding onto for the Heat.
