Long before Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards staked his claim as one of the premier players in the NBA today, he starred playing another sport. Edwards played football and was a standout running back in Pop Warner.
He’s also floated the idea of playing in both the NFL and NBA.
Edwards was the latest athlete to appear in a YouTube video with GQ Sports, and he touched on the subject of potentially playing in the NFL. While he said that he wants to play in the league, he likes the current situation he’s in.
“Nah, I’m cool,” Edwards said of playing in the NFL. “I mean I want to, but I love where I’m at.”
If Edwards were to leave the NBA for the NFL, it would be a devastating loss for the Timberwolves, as Edwards has helped change the fortunes of the franchise for the better in recent years.
When Minnesota drafted Edwards with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the Timberwolves had made just one playoff appearance since 2004. But ever since Edwards has been in the fold, Minnesota has been a consistent playoff team in a competitive Western Conference.
The Timberwolves have qualified for the playoffs in each of the last four seasons and aren’t far removed from one of their most successful playoff runs in franchise history. In 2024, Minnesota reached the Western Conference Finals for just the second time in team history.
Plus, Edwards has the Timberwolves on the cusp of pulling off an upset against forward LeBron James, guard Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers in the opening round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs. Minnesota has a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, and Edwards is averaging 29.8 points per game against the Lakers. The Timberwolves can close out Los Angeles with a road victory in Game 5 on Wednesday.
While Edwards might have what it takes to play in the NFL, Timberwolves fans should hope that he doesn’t join the league for the sake of the future success of the franchise. But Edwards’ comments seem to indicate that fans of the team don’t have to worry about him joining the NFL, at least not right now.
