D’Angelo Russell appears to have unfollowed Minnesota Timberwolves on Instagram

The Minnesota Timberwolves and D’Angelo Russell may be on the verge of a split if the star guard’s recent social media activity is any indication.

According to a Wolves news page on Twitter, the veteran guard is no longer following the team’s official account on Instagram.

The Wolves are loaded with talent and were expected to be major players in the Western Conference this season, but those expectations have not been met so far.

On the season, the Wolves are 17-21 and sit as the No. 11 seed in the West. For that reason, the team’s front office may feel that changes to the roster must be made.

Russell could be the odd man out, as Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert are likely considered untouchable by the team.

Russell could be a great addition for a team that is looking for a starting guard. Though he’s currently playing in his eighth NBA season, he is still just 26 years old. This season, he’s averaging 17.0 points, 6.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game on 45.8 percent shooting from the field and 34.9 percent shooting from deep.

With all that in mind, it is also possible that Russell’s decision to apparently unfollow the team doesn’t really indicate much of anything at all. As a rule, it is typically wise to not put much weight into what players do on social media.

Still, as the Feb. 9 trade deadline for this NBA season quickly approaches, it is hard to blame reporters and fans alike for trying to read into potential clues.

When it comes to which teams might be interested in adding Russell, veteran NBA reporter Brian Windhorst feels that the Miami Heat make some sense as a possible destination.

It is possible that the Heat would be interested in trading veteran Kyle Lowry for Russell in a guard swap. In such a deal, the Heat would add some needed youth to their roster while the Wolves would add some veteran leadership and championship pedigree.

Only time will tell if any deal involving Russell gets done, but his recent social media activity may indicate that his name is one to watch.
