The Minnesota Timberwolves are off to a great start to the 2023-24 regular season. They own a 5-2 record with wins over title contenders such as the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics.
The play of star guard Anthony Edwards is a big reason why the Timberwolves are one of the hottest teams in the NBA to start the season.
An NBA scout recently called Edwards a top-10 player in the league right now.
“Anthony Edwards is a top-10 player in the NBA right now,” the NBA scout told HoopsHype. “He’s the real deal and plays both sides of the ball.”
Edwards, 22, was selected with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft. He is in his fourth season in the NBA and as a member of the Timberwolves franchise. He earned the first All-Star appearance of his pro career a season ago.
Across seven appearances with the Timberwolves franchise so far this season, Edwards is averaging 27.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game while shooting an impressive 51.0 percent from the field.
Impressively, Edwards hasn’t finished with fewer than 19 points in any game this season.
Arguably his best performance of the season to this point came against Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics on Nov. 6. Edwards scored a game-high 38 points for the Timberwolves and shot 15-of-25 from the field. Plus, he pulled down nine rebounds and dished out seven assists in a game Minnesota went on to win in overtime by a final score of 114-109.
The Timberwolves have played as well as any team in the NBA at home, as they own a 5-0 home record. But they’ve also struggled to win games on the road, as evidenced by their 0-2 road record.
Minnesota’s two road losses this season came against the Toronto Raptors on Oct. 25 and Atlanta Hawks on Oct. 30.
The Timberwolves will play Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs in an In-Season Tournament game on Friday. Minnesota will be hoping to earn its first road win of the season.
But it won’t come easy considering Wembanyama has been impacting both sides of the ball for the Spurs early in his rookie season.
