The Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly checked in on John Wall prior to the 2022-23 season.
Wall, who is now with the Los Angeles Clippers, has played well in mainly a bench role for Los Angeles this season.
It doesn’t look like the Clippers would move Wall, especially since they are looking to win an NBA title this season, but he apparently was an option for the Wolves prior to the season had they decided to move point guard D’Angelo Russell.
Darren Wolfson explained that the Timberwolves kicked the tires on bringing in John Wall this past offseason when he was on the open market.
“This Wolves regime, Tim Connelly and company, after John Wall was on the open market for a little bit when the Wolves were trying to navigate, ‘Okay, do we move D-Lo’ … this is going back to the summer (…) they kicked the tires on John Wall,” said Wolfson.
Russell is in the final season of his contract with the Timberwolves, so it’s possible the team could look to move him to find a long-term answer at the position.
However, the Wolves have been playing better as of late, moving into the No. 9 seed in the West with a 25-25 record. The team has been without star Karl-Anthony Towns for a good chunk of the 2022-23 season, so there is still a chance it can make a run when he returns.
While Wall may not be an option available to the Wolves at the deadline, it’s interesting that the team was interested in the veteran point guard.
The interest in Wall could signal the type of player that the Wolves are looking to bring in alongside Towns, Rudy Gobert and Anthony Edwards.
This season, Wall has appeared in 34 games for the Clippers, making three starts. After playing sparingly the last few seasons due to injuries and sitting out with the Houston Rockets, Wall has been serviceable in the 2022-23 season.
The five-time All-Star is averaging 11.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game while shooting 40.8 percent from the field and 30.3 percent from beyond the arc for Los Angeles.
With the Wolves looking to make a playoff push, it will be interesting to see how they handle their point guard position at the deadline with Russell’s future with the franchise up in the air beyond this season.
