The Minnesota Timberwolves finally got over the hump in the 2021-22 NBA season and advanced into the playoffs after getting through the play-in tournament in the Western Conference.
Though the Wolves certainly have young talent on their roster, namely in players Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns, there is still room for improvement.
Most notably, the Wolves are going to need to improve on the defensive side of the ball if they want to become a truly elite unit. Perhaps that’s why it’s not all that shocking to learn that a recent report has linked the Wolves to Utah Jazz big man Rudy Gobert.
The report also pegged Clint Capela as another potential target for Minnesota.
At the moment, a lot of rumors are pointing to Gobert’s time in Utah soon coming to an end. He and star guard Donovan Mitchell don’t seem to see eye to eye on much, and Gobert’s value in the postseason has often been brought into question.
However, if he were able to relinquish some of his current offensive duties and focus primarily on defending, he would likely be a major help to many teams.
Last season, he average 15.6 points, 14.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game.
When it comes to what assets the Wolves could consider moving to grab Gobert, it is wise to consider both Edwards and Towns untouchable. That leaves pieces such as D’Angelo Russell and Malik Beasley as potential options. The Wolves could also decide to go all in on the present and deal a number of future picks in exchange for the star big man.
With the NBA offseason just getting started, the Wolves appear to be a team to keep an eye on when it comes to where one of the league’s best defensive anchors could end up.
