New Orleans Pelicans rising superstar Zion Williamson believes he had what it took to play in the NFL if he hadn’t taken the NBA path.
“Yeah, I believe I could,” Williamson said in response to whether he could have reached the NFL. “I’m just a competitor.”
Williamson mentioned Tuesday on former NFL tight end Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast that two specific positions would fit his skillset, saying, “I think I would either do tight end or receiver. One of those two.”
Williamson’s stature would certainly fit the tight end or wide receiver role well, especially in the red zone with his 6-foot-7 and 284-pound frame.
Williamson, 20, is having a remarkable sophomore season for the Pelicans, averaging 26.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game this season while shooting a staggering 61.4 percent from the field.
Through the Pelicans’ struggles this season, Williamson has shone. He earned his first All-Star selection this year, appearing as a starter for Team Durant last month.
New Orleans is fighting for a spot in the Western Conference play-in games, currently sitting at 11th place in the standings with a 25-32 record.
