It’s no secret that the New York Knicks are interested in New Orleans Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball.
Now, it appears Ball shares a strong mutual interest with the Knicks.
“The Post has learned the Knicks, with plenty of cap room, would be heavily on Ball’s radar as a restricted free agent,” wrote Marc Berman of the New York Post.
Ball, 23, has been linked to numerous teams in trade talks this season.
The point guard is putting up a career-high 14.2 points per game on top of 5.5 assists, 4.2 boards and 1.3 steals per contest this season. He’s in his second campaign with the Pelicans.
While the Pelicans have the ability to sign the fourth-year pro in restricted free agency this summer, they’re reportedly wary of the potential tax implications should he secure a big contract.
“The Pelicans passed on giving Ball a rookie contract extension at the December deadline,” wrote Berman. “Ball will be seeking big bucks this summer – and Pelicans ownership historically is afraid of luxury-tax implications.”
The Knicks are looking to continue to build on their surprisingly successful roster this season. The team has a 20-21 record and is in the No. 8 seat in the Eastern Conference.
As for the Pelicans, they’re the No. 11 seed in the Western Conference with a 17-23 record.
