The New York Knicks could be in the market for a point guard with the NBA trade deadline fast approaching.
They might have a target in mind, as the team is reportedly interested in Jalen Brunson of the Dallas Mavericks.
“With ‘T-Day’ approaching in 3 ¹/₂ weeks, the Mavericks are certainly capable of moving Brunson before the 2018 second-round pick becomes an unrestricted free agent,” wrote Marc Berman of the New York Post.
“The Knicks already contacted the Mavericks sometime in the past about Brunson, an NBA source said.
“‘They want him bad,’ the NBA source said.”
The fourth-year guard is currently having the best season of his career, averaging 16.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game. Brunson has certainly capitalized on the opportunity he has been given, with Mavericks star Luka Doncic missing a significant number of games this season due to injury.
Brunson is in the final year of his rookie contract and will become an unrestricted free agent after this season. Rather than lose him for nothing, Dallas could consider trading him to another team to get back some players or picks.
However, there could be some hesitation from the front office, as the Mavs have been playing well so far this campaign. They are 24-19 and stand fifth in the Western Conference. The team has also won eight of its last 10 games.
Only time will tell if the Knicks push hard for a trade for the Villanova University product or if he ends up remaining in a Mavs uniform until the end of the season.
