Oklahoma City Thunder player Josh Giddey reportedly is the subject of police inquiry after allegations surfaced that he had a relationship with a minor.
Allegations against Giddey came out on social media, alleging that the Thunder star had a relationship with a supposed high school junior. Giddey, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, is currently 21 years old.
“Police are doing their due diligence on the recent troubling allegations surrounding Oklahoma City Thunder player Josh Giddey…with officials opening an inquiry into whether he had an inappropriate relationship with a minor,” TMZ reported.
“Law enforcement sources tell TMZ Sports…Newport Beach PD is currently investigating the allegations involving Giddey made on social media over the past week…to see if there is any validity to the claims and if any laws were broken.”
The allegations against Giddey are troubling, and the former lottery pick declined to comment on them when asked.
The NBA is also investigating the allegations made towards Giddey.
It’s a concerning situation for the Thunder, Giddey and NBA, as there is no room for a player having an inappropriate relationship with a minor. Giddey’s fate will likely be determined once law enforcement and the NBA are able to complete their investigations.
Giddey has been a solid player for the Thunder, playing multiple positions for the team while running the offense at times in his first three NBA seasons.
He’s a part of a young core that features Jalen Williams (who made an All-Rookie team last season), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (who was an All-NBA selection last season) and the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft in Chet Holmgren.
Oklahoma City has taken a major step forward this season, winning 11 of its first 16 games. The team is the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference and has gone 8-2 overs its last 10 matchups.
Giddey has certainly been an impact player for the Thunder in his third NBA season. He is averaging 12.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 30.0 percent from beyond the arc.
With several mouths to feed on offense, Giddey has seen his minutes decrease this season while attempting his fewest field-goal attempts per game (12.3). Still, Oklahoma City has been successful.
For now, the Thunder and Giddey will have to wait and see the results of the investigations into the allegations made against the Australian youngster before jumping to a decision about his future with the team and in the NBA.
