Report: Expectation is that Thunder will be able to trade Kemba Walker for assets

According to a recent report, there is an expectation that the Oklahoma City Thunder will be able to move point guard Kemba Walker for additional assets before the 2021-22 season starts.

The report likely comes as a surprise to some fans. Between his contract situation, age and production, many people perceived Walker to be a negative asset when the Thunder traded for him. If the opposite proves to be true, it would be a big win for Oklahoma City.

During his 2020-21 campaign with the Boston Celtics, Walker struggled to stay healthy. When he was on the floor, he averaged 19.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game while shooting 42.o percent from the field and 36.0 percent from deep.

There seems to be a premium on playmakers this offseason, as many NBA teams have voids to fill at the point guard position. With that being the case, Walker’s value could be getting a boost.

At his best, Walker is capable of being a primary scoring option as well as an elite distributor. For example, in the 2018-19 season, he averaged 25.6 points and 5.9 assists per game. It remains to be seen whether he is still capable of playing at that level, but the upcoming campaign should be telling.

The Thunder are looking to expedite their rebuild after going 22-5o last season.
