Report: Dennis Schroder’s trade value is ‘2nd-rounders at best’

Toronto Raptors guard Dennis Schroder could be a trade candidate ahead of the deadline this season, but according to one report, his value might be on the lower side.

“Dennis Schroder would be of interest to teams looking for point-guard depth, but the return would be second-rounders at best, said one league source,” wrote NBA insider Michael Grange.

Schroder has been traded multiple times in his career, so he’s no stranger to the process. This season’s deadline is set for Thursday, meaning the veteran won’t have to wait much longer before learning where he’ll spend the remainder of the campaign.

In 50 games this season, Schroder has averaged 13.6 points, 2.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists per contest while shooting 44.2 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from 3-point range. This is his first season with the Raptors.

The 30-year-old is under contract through next season, which means any team that potentially trades for him this week would be getting more than just a rental. His contract situation also gives the Raptors some flexibility as far as viewing him as a trade chip, as they could wait until the offseason to move him if desired.

Schroder has become a bit of a journeyman in the NBA, as he has suited up for six different teams. He could join a seventh this season if a squad is looking to add some guard depth. Schroder is certainly capable of bringing some help to the table, and perhaps he’d welcome the idea of joining a contending team.

The Raptors are entering a new chapter, and at 17-33, they’re unlikely to crack the postseason in the 2023-24 campaign. For that reason, they’ll be an interesting team to monitor before the deadline.

But if Schroder’s perceived trade value around the NBA isn’t enough to satisfy Toronto, perhaps the team will keep him around and explore other options after the season is over.

In the meantime, the Raptors will be in action on Wednesday against the Charlotte Hornets, giving Toronto one last chance to get in the win column before the deadline. The Raptors have lost three games in a row and are looking to end that streak against a Hornets team that has just 10 wins all season.
