In the wake of Saturday’s stunning upset of Team USA by Nigeria in a pre-Olympic exhibition, NBA teams will reportedly be taking a closer look at Nigerian guard Caleb Agada.
The 26-year-old Agada scored 17 points was one of a number of Nigerian players who bombarded Team USA from beyond the arc with the team hitting for 20 3-pointers. Agada connected for three of those in the 90-87 upset.
Agada played collegiately in Canada at the University of Ottawa and was most recently playing internationally in Israel. While the performance has put him on the map, there’s no guarantee that he can use the effort as a stepping stone to a spot on an NBA roster.
Nigeria’s win came nine years after the country lost by 83 points to Team USA in the 2012 Summer Olympics and will certainly make other countries wary when they take the court in the weeks ahead.
For Team USA, the loss serves as a wakeup call to not look past any opponent on their schedule or face missing out on winning the gold medal for the first time since 2004.
