According to a Thursday report, the NBA will retire the No. 6 jersey to honor the life and legacy of the late, great Bill Russell.

Russell died late last month at 88 years of age.

It’s a big move and major sign of respect by the league. Of course, franchises have had the freedom to retire numbers for years to honor the legacies of past players.

However, for the league to decide to retire a number is a huge sign of just how impactful Russell was for the league.

It’s clear that the NBA is committed to keeping Russell’s memory alive for years to come.
