San Antonio Spurs rookie big man Victor Wembanyama said that he powers off his phone and deletes social media apps for up to months at a time in order to limit his distractions.
“I turn my phone off,” Wembanyama said.
The 20-year-old continued and said that he’ll download the apps back if he feels the need to search for something.
“Most of the time those apps aren’t even on my phone,” Wembanyama said. “I delete them for days, weeks, or months sometimes. And whenever I want to look something up, I download them again.”
Finally, he claimed that his social media usage has never been problematic for him.
“It’s not something I ever had to worry about,” he said.
Wembanyama has been one of the more popular players in the NBA in the 2023-24 regular season thanks to the impressive numbers he has put up in his first season in the league. He has played 63 games (all starts) and is averaging 20.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.3 steals and a league-best 3.4 blocks per game on 46.6 percent shooting from the floor and 32.1 percent from 3-point range.
The Frenchman ranks first among all rookies in points per game, rebounds per game, blocks per game and steals per game. Additionally, he makes the most field goals per game and ranks sixth in 3-point field goals per contest among rookies.
Wembanyama played limited minutes in the Spurs’ most recent game against the Phoenix Suns on March 23 — as he saw the court for just under 21 minutes — but still managed to rack up 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and one block while shooting 5-of-7 from the field and 1-of-2 from deep in San Antonio’s 25-point loss.
After falling to the Suns, the Spurs have now lost their last three contests. San Antonio owns the worst record in the Western Conference with a record of 15-56. The Spurs are four games behind the Portland Trail Blazers — who are riding a six-game losing streak — for the No. 14 seed in the conference.
The only two teams in the NBA with worse records than San Antonio at the moment are the Washington Wizards and Detroit Pistons.
While Wembanyama’s superb two-way chops haven’t led the Spurs to many wins at all in his maiden NBA season, he has arguably lived up to the generational hype he was receiving before he was drafted with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
