Teyana Taylor accuses Iman Shumpert of being ‘emotionally and mentally abusive’ during relationship

The marriage between singer and actress Teyana Taylor and former NBA champion Iman Shumpert is coming to an end.

Taylor originally announced the split in September on Instagram, but she apparently filed for divorce back in January while citing jealousy and narcissism on Shumpert’s part as driving factors, per TMZ. She actually initially began the divorce process in 2021, but didn’t follow through with it until this year.

TMZ obtained legal documents on the divorce.

“Teyana says she fought to keep their family together despite Iman ‘being extremely emotionally and mentally abusive towards her,'” TMZ wrote. “She says she used her connections to get Iman gigs in Hollywood as his NBA career wound down, but says he ‘unfortunately insisted on bickering’ to the point where in 2021 she began the divorce process.”

According to Taylor, Shumpert was jealous of her level of fame and insecure about being enough for her. She claims that Shumpert would get annoyed when photographers would snap photos of her but not him, adding that she ultimately turned down recording and acting opportunities in order to appease Shumpert.

Taylor also claims that Shumpert was “treating her cruelly and displaying extreme narcissistic behavior throughout the majority of their marriage.” According to the singer, she “began to intentionally dim her light for her husband to try to have a harmonious and peaceful marriage.”

Though Taylor wanted to remain with Shumpert through the difficult times, she eventually reached a breaking point and felt that she couldn’t remain in the relationship any longer. It was at that point that she decided to move forward with the divorce.

When Taylor first announced the split in September, she stated that infidelity wasn’t a factor, but she now claims that Shumpert was involved in multiple cheating scandals over the course of their marriage, which began in 2016.

According to Taylor, Shumpert left their family home in October and hasn’t spent much time with their two children since. The singer and actor is seeking temporary and permanent primary physical custody, plus joint legal custody and child support.

Shumpert’s NBA career spanned 10 years, and he played for five different franchises during that time: the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets and Brooklyn Nets.

He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2012 as a member of the Knicks, and he helped the Cavaliers win their first NBA championship in 2016.

He compiled 3,320 points, 1,534 rebounds, 845 assists, 514 steals and 120 blocks over the course of his career.
