Houston Rockets guard John Wall reportedly would welcome a reunion with the Washington Wizards.
According to The Athletic’s David Aldridge, Wall has recently discussed the possibility of rejoining the team that drafted him back in 2010.
“If it can plausibly be argued that the [Los Angeles] Lakers would benefit by getting Wall from Houston for Russell Westbrook, a potential trade rumored to have been discussed before the trade deadline, why wouldn’t the Wizards also improve by re-emigrating their former five-time All-Star?” Aldridge wrote. “Wall would welcome a return to the team that took him with the No. 1 pick in the 2010 draft. It’s something he recently discussed with people close to him and around the league.
“‘That … is true,’ one NBA source said Tuesday.”
Wall was with the Wizards from the 2010-11 season through the 2019-20 season before he was traded for Russell Westbrook prior to last season. He has a solid relationship with current Wizards star Bradley Beal, and the Wizards have a hole at the point guard position.
Washington traded away Spencer Dinwiddie for Kristaps Porzingis at this year’s trade deadline, which certainly provides a path for Wall to slide into the Wizards’ rotation. However, the Rockets guard has not played this season as Houston continues its rebuild.
The five-time All-Star appeared in 40 games for Houston in the 2020-21 season. He averaged 20.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game while shooting 40.4 percent from the field and 31.7 percent from beyond the arc.
While Wall has played just 72 games since the start of the 2018-19 season, he could certainly help a team in need and may be the healthiest he’s been in several years.
It will be interesting to see if Washington explores a reunion with Wall this coming offseason.
