With the Chicago Bears possibly gearing up to trade quarterback Justin Fields, there has been a lot of talk surrounding what type of return the 24-year-old could net.
While many think that the Bears could acquire a draft pick in the second or third round for Fields, at least one coach seems to think that the team could snag a first-round selection in exchange for the quarterback.
“There was one outlier from a coach who thought the Bears could get a first-round pick,” wrote The Athletic’s Jeff Howe.
“‘Supply and demand,’ the coach said.”
Fields has been with Chicago for three seasons. During his stint, he has had some very bright moments. Unfortunately for him, the Bears will have the option to select quarterback Caleb Williams — a game-changing prospect in the eyes of some — with the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft.
Many expect the Bears to do just that and move on from Fields. Williams — who won the Heisman in 2022 — had an extremely prolific collegiate career. Across three seasons, he threw for 10,082 yards, 93 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions. On the ground, he added 966 yards and 27 scores.
As for Fields, concerns exist about his passing ability, though he is a major threat with his legs. In the 2022 season, for instance, he rushed for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Bears are trying to turn their fortunes around and reach the playoffs for the first time since the 2020 season. They’re also still looking for their first playoff win since the 2010 season.
If they were to trade Fields and get a first-round pick in return, they’d likely be thrilled, but it’s unclear just how likely that is. It’s worth noting, however, that there are numerous teams around the NFL that need help at the quarterback position, which could create a competitive market for the former No. 11 overall pick.
The 2024 NFL Draft will begin in April. By the time the event arrives, there will likely be a lot more clarity for Bears fans as they monitor the direction of their team. The next several weeks figure to be crucial for the organization.
Chicago’s last Super Bowl victory came in the 1985 season. Many of today’s Bears fans weren’t alive to experience that championship run.
