According to a report, the Cleveland Browns have not yet offered quarterback Baker Mayfield a contract extension.
“Quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns remain in a holding pattern with his contract extension,” wrote Jeff Howe of The Athletic.
“So far, each side has been comfortable with that approach.
“The Browns have yet to extend an offer to the No. 1 pick from the 2018 NFL Draft, according to sources. But while all is currently quiet, neither side has ruled out the idea of opening negotiations during the season. The relationship between Mayfield and the Browns remains positive, according to the sources.”
The Mayfield era in Cleveland has been a success so far in the sense that he helped take the organization from a perennial loser to a playoff team in the 2020 season. However, it seems like the franchise might want to see more from the 26-year-old before offering him a new deal.
In the 2020 season, Mayfield completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 3,563 yards and 26 touchdowns. He led the team to an 11-5 regular season and a playoff bid.
The University of Oklahoma product is hoping to help the Browns get back to the playoffs this season. Unfortunately, the Browns’ season got off to a rocky start last weekend when the team took a 33-29 loss on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Cleveland is ultimately going to have to decide whether or not it wants a long-term future with Mayfield. Many fans feel that he’s a great fit with the organization, and it would certainly be a major story if the two sides were to part ways in the near future.
