Dallas Cowboys’ Super Bowl hopes take massive blow with devastating Trevon Diggs injury

Star Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs reportedly suffered a torn ACL in his knee during practice Thursday.

Quarterback Dak Prescott earlier said “prayers for him” about his teammate but the bad news that was feared seems confirmed.

Diggs has helped the Cowboys defense get off to an outstanding start through two games this season. They shut out the New York Giants 40-0 in their season opener and followed that with a 30-10 victory over the New York Jets.

The Cowboys rank first in the NFL in fewest total yards allowed, fewest passing yards allowed, fewest points allowed, takeaways and are tied for most sacks.

Dallas is set to play at the winless Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Diggs started his fourth NFL season with four total tackles, one interception and one forced fumble. The two-time Pro Bowl selection and veteran Stephon Gilmore are arguably one of the best cornerback duos in the NFL.

Dallas has emerged as an early Super Bowl contender and is tied for the best record in the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders. The Cowboys are big favorites on the road Sunday and should be able to get past the Cardinals without Diggs, but the injury looks like it will keep him out for the rest of the season and could be very costly to Dallas’ larger goal of winning a championship.

Diggs had 11 interceptions and scored two touchdowns during the 2021 season and has made more than 50 total tackles in each of his first three campaigns coming out of the University of Alabama. He is the brother of Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

The Cowboys still have several standout players on defense, led by pass rusher Micah Parsons, who is being mentioned as a possible NFL MVP candidate. With three sacks in the first two games, he is the betting favorite to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Dallas has gotten off to a charmed start to the season, but this serious injury to one of its star players could change its fortunes on the field and may also have an effect on locker room morale.
