Former Ohio State University football coach Urban Meyer reportedly is eyeing the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching position.
The Jaguars are likely to move on from current head coach Doug Marrone following this season, which would allow Meyer an opportunity to coach in the NFL.
The Blade’s Kyle Rowland reported that Meyer has had discussions about the Jags’ potential opening.
“Urban Meyer is considering becoming an NFL head coach, multiple sources have told The Blade,” Rowland wrote.
“The former Ohio State head coach has had exploratory discussions with intermediaries about the Jacksonville Jaguars job.”
Meyer retired from coaching back in 2018 due to culminating health issues. He reportedly is interested in returning to the state of Florida, where he coached the University of Florida and won two BCS Championships.
“According to sources, Meyer, 56, is seriously considering Jacksonville,” Rowland wrote. “It would put him back in Florida, where he coached the Gators and lived for seven years, and he could draft Clemson [University] quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The Jaguars (1-14) are locked in for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft after losing on Sunday. The New York Jets (2-13) and Jaguars can still tie for the NFL’s worst record, but Jacksonville holds the tiebreaker for the No. 1 pick.”
The Jaguars job will likely be one of the top jobs on the market this coming offseason, as Lawrence is considered to be one of the best quarterback prospects in years.
The Jaguars have struggled this season after gutting their roster, but they have some promising pieces on offense such as running back James Robinson and wide receivers D.J. Chark Jr., Laviska Shenault Jr. and Collin Johnson.
Meyer has a career head-coaching record in college of 187-32.
