An anonymous general manager for a team in the AFC is seemingly unhappy that the Kansas City Chiefs traded up in the 2024 NFL Draft in order to acquire wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
Worthy put up gaudy receiving numbers in 14 games played with the University of Texas at Austin during the 2023 season. He totaled 1,014 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns on 75 receptions with the Longhorns.
Furthermore, he averaged 13.5 receiving yards per reception.
The 20-year-old finished with 100-plus receiving yards in two of the 14 games he played with Texas in his third and final season with the team. First, he tallied 108 receiving yards on eight receptions in a loss to the University of Oklahoma back on Oct. 7.
Fast forward a little over a month later, and Worthy accumulated a season-high 137 receiving yards and averaged 13.7 receiving yards per reception versus Texas Christian University on Nov. 11.
Worthy is set to join a Chiefs squad that is fresh off winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Kansas City beat the Philadelphia Eagles in February of 2023 by a final score of 38-35 and more recently beat the San Francisco 49ers by three points a few months ago on Feb. 11.
The Chiefs are the first NFL franchise to win two Super Bowls in a row since the New England Patriots did it when they employed arguably the greatest signal-caller in league history in Tom Brady.
Worthy will have an opportunity to start his NFL career playing alongside one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL today in Patrick Mahomes. During the 2023 regular season, Mahomes threw for 4,183 yards and 27 touchdowns compared to 14 interceptions.
For as great of a passer as Mahomes is, he also contributed from a rushing standpoint. In his seventh season with the Chiefs, Mahomes ended up with 389 rushing yards and 27 first downs rushing.
Perhaps getting drafted to a great team led by a talented quarterback will allow Worthy to make the adjustment to playing in the NFL more seamlessly than others.
