Several Kansas City Chiefs players — including Patrick Mahomes, Drue Tranquill and Trey Smith — took to social media to react to the deadly shooting that occurred at the squad’s Super Bowl parade.
Mike Pennel, Justin Reid and Mike Edwards also offered their own prayers.
One person was killed and 10 to 15 others suffered injuries in the shooting that took place in Kansas City, Mo. on Wednesday. The identity of the individual who passed away has not yet been revealed to the public.
According to officials, three of the victims of the shooting are in critical condition while five are currently in serious condition. The shooting reportedly happened west of Union Station.
Arnold Sauther, who attended the parade, described the chaos that took place after fans pursued Chiefs players into Union Station in hopes of getting autographs.
“Then, all of a sudden they all started running out, and you see all these policemen come running in there — and you knew something happened in the station,” Sauther said.
An unidentified woman in attendance also painted a picture of what was going on.
“People started crashing forward, everybody started running, there was screaming,” she told KMBC. “We didn’t know what was happening, but in this day and age when people run, you run.
“We went where an elevator was, we shut the doors and sat back against the doors and we prayed.”
According to the Kansas City Police Department, two suspects have been detained. Also, thankfully none of the players on the Chiefs suffered injuries in the fatal incident.
The Chiefs released a statement, calling what took place a “senseless act of violence.”
The team and its fans gathered to celebrate Kansas City’s 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. Kansas City won its second Super Bowl in a row in dramatic fashion, as the game went into overtime. The 49ers were actually the first team to score in the period.
But after San Francisco scored a field goal to take the lead, Mahomes proceeded to help the Chiefs score the game-winning touchdown. Mahomes finished the game with 333 passing yards and two passing touchdowns on 34 completions.
It’s a shame that the shooting put a damper on what was supposed to be a celebratory day for the Chiefs and all of their fans.
Fans surely appreciate that Mahomes, Tranquill and Smith expressed their concern for those impacted by the shooting. Look for updates to be provided in the coming days.
