Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered an ankle injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars last weekend, but on Wednesday, he said the ankle is “doing good” as his squad prepares for this weekend’s AFC Championship.
The Chiefs obviously have their fingers crossed that their franchise superstar will be good to go against the Cincinnati Bengals.
“It’s doing good,” Mahomes said after being asked about the ankle. “I’ve had a few days of treatment, a few days of rehab, excited to get on the practice field and kinda test it out and see where I’m at, but it’s feeling good so far.”
Mahomes had an outstanding showing in the 2022 regular season, leading the league in passing yards (5,250) and passing touchdowns (41) among other key categories.
He led the Chiefs to a 14-3 record, good for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Kansas City earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs and then snuck by Jacksonville 27-20 last weekend.
The Chiefs are now just two wins away from claiming their second Super Bowl title of the 2020s. But before they can start thinking about that, they’re going to have to deal with an extremely difficult Bengals team on Sunday.
Led by Joe Burrow, the Bengals are looking to return to the Super Bowl after getting there last season. Cincinnati wasn’t able to finish the job last time, as the squad lost in heartbreaking fashion to the Los Angeles Rams.
The Bengals are undoubtedly motivated to finish the job this time around.
Mahomes’ health will certainly be something to keep an eye on when the Chiefs and Bengals meet this Sunday. Even if the 27-year-old plays, there’s a chance he won’t be at 100 percent. That’s going to be a major storyline leading up to the game.
In the regular season, Cincinnati and Kansas City met once, and the Bengals earned a 27-24 win. Cincinnati had home-field advantage in that game, but that won’t be the case this weekend.
The winner of this matchup will take on the winner of the Philadelphia Eagles-San Francisco 49ers clash. The NFL will have a new champion this season, as last year’s Super Bowl-winning Rams are no longer in the mix.
