Wednesday was supposed to be full of celebration for the Kansas City Chiefs and their fans, but a deadly shooting clouded much of the happiness.

With some victims from the shooting still recovering, authorities said on Friday that two juveniles have been charged with crimes connected to the incident.

The Jackson County Family Court released a statement explaining that the juveniles had been charged on Thursday.

“Two juveniles were charged on Thursday, February 15, 2024, by the Office of the Juvenile Officer related to the incident at the Chiefs’ rally on February 14, 2024,” the statement read.

“The juveniles are currently detained in secure detention at the Juvenile Detention Center on gun related and resisting arrest charges.

“It is anticipated that additional charges are expected in the future as the investigation by the Kansas City Police Department continues.

“Pursuant to Missouri law, hearings are not open to the public as this alleged offense involves juveniles. This is the extent of the information that the Office of the Juvenile Officer can release at this time.”

Three juveniles were initially detained by police, though one (determined to not be involved in the shooting) was later released.

One person — a mother and disc jockey named Lisa Lopez-Galvan — died, while 22 others (more than half of them children) were injured.

Katrina Rojas Vincent, a family friend, described Lopez-Galvan with much admiration.

“Always had that a smile ear to ear and just the positivity that she brought to our community with the music that she would play on her radio program,” Vincent said.

After the shooting took place, plenty of Chiefs players took to social media to offer their prayers for everyone affected. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany even took time to visit two of the victims.

The Chiefs are less than a week removed from beating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in the Super Bowl. The game went into overtime and finished with Patrick Mahomes throwing a touchdown pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who was uncovered.

For much of the 2023 regular season, plenty of people doubted the Chiefs. After all, they were 8-5 at one point and didn’t seem to be all that scary. However, the team rallied to finish 11-6 and beat the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs before Sunday’s game against the 49ers.

What made Kansas City’s playoff run so impressive was the fact that it had to play at Buffalo and Baltimore to just make it to the Super Bowl.

The title is the second in a row for the Chiefs, who will look to pull off the first three-peat in NFL history in the 2024 campaign. It seems like most of the core will be returning for the upcoming season, which will surely makes the Chiefs among the betting favorites to win it all.
