Travis Kelce says recent Chiefs practice got ‘chippy’ ahead of Super Bowl vs. 49ers

Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce revealed that the team had a “chippy” practice on Wednesday with its matchup against the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl just a few days away.

In order to have the privilege to play on the grandest stage in the NFL, the Chiefs had to pick up wins over the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs.

Conversely, the 49ers had to eliminate the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions from the playoffs to secure a spot in the Super Bowl. San Francisco beat the Lions by just three points in the NFC Championship Game back on Jan. 28.

Kelce — who has spent the entirety of his NFL career with the Chiefs organization — is widely recognized as one of the better tight ends ever to play the game of football. Across 15 games played with the Chiefs during the 2023 regular season, he accumulated 984 receiving yards to go along with 50 first downs receiving on 93 receptions.

Those impressive numbers were enough for Kelce to earn the ninth Pro Bowl nod of his NFL career.

The 34-year-old is fresh off a dominant performance against the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game. Kelce racked up 116 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown on 11 receptions in the Chiefs’ seven-point road victory.

But for as well as Kelce played against Baltimore, he played even better against the Los Angeles Chargers back on Oct. 22 in what was perhaps his best game of the 2023 regular season. He finished with 179 receiving yards, and his longest reception in that game was for 53 yards.

The Chiefs cruised to a 14-point home win over the Chargers. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes starred along with Kelce, considering he threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns compared to just one interception.

If Kelce is able to replicate his performance in the AFC Championship Game against the 49ers this weekend, Chiefs fans should feel optimistic about their chances of winning another Super Bowl.
