Former New England Patriots cornerback Jason McCourty simultaneously took a playful shot at his brother Devin and pleaded for the Patriots to draft a signal-caller with the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy are three of the quarterbacks that could be available when it’s New England’s turn to pick a player. Caleb Williams is expected to go No. 1 overall to the Chicago Bears.
Daniels is set to meet with the Patriots, who appear to be very interested in the 23-year-old, following his Pro Day.
Devin McCourty spent the entirety of his 13-year NFL career with the Patriots. During his decade-plus stint in New England, he earned two Pro Bowl selections and won three Super Bowls.
He was even able to play alongside his brother on the Patriots for three seasons, as Jason McCourty played for New England from the 2018 season through the 2020 campaign.
While his twin brother spent the entirety of his NFL career with one team, Jason McCourty bounced around from team to team during his time in the pros. Along with suiting up for the Patriots for a period of time, he also spent time with the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins.
Jason McCourty and Devin McCourty’s former team in the Patriots were one of the worst teams in the NFL during the 2023 regular season. New England finished the season with an abysmal 4-13 record, which was the worst record in the AFC East division by a landslide, as the New York Jets had the second-worst record in the division at 7-10.
Part of the reason why the Patriots struggled to win games was the play of quarterback Mac Jones, who started 11 games for New England. Jones finished with 12 interceptions compared to 10 passing touchdowns on the season and ended up with a quarterback rating of 77.0.
Quarterback Bailey Zappe started the other six games of the regular season, but he arguably didn’t fare any better than Jones. He also threw more interceptions (nine) than touchdowns (six) while averaging only 127.2 passing yards per game.
Considering the lack of production that the Patriots received from their quarterbacks during the 2023 campaign, it seemingly would be wise for the team to heed Jason McCourty’s advice and select a signal-caller with the No. 3 pick.
